It was 20 years ago today…
18th December 2019
… that Whiteley launched its first website!
Looking at publicly available records the address whiteleyvillage.org.uk was registered on the 6th December 1999 and shortly afterwards our first website went live. And so what better way to celebrate the launch of our new site than by taking a look at how it’s changed over the years.
To coincide with the launch of our new website, we’ve done some digging through the internet of yesterday and traced our website back to its roots. And here’s what we found…
Here’s how the website looked when it first launched in 1999:
An elegant design we’re sure you’ll agree, but it’s worth remembering that the internet was still in its infancy at this point, broadband was just becoming mainstream and screen sizes were much smaller. As such the site made use of minimal images and consisted of only a handful of pages, one of which was, rather bizarrely devoted to village pets!
Then in 2002, the website went through another redesign, this time utilising the power of “Flash”, which allowed for a more interactive experience. This design held sway for 6 years before it was time for a refresh.
And here we are in 2008… with a much more modern design… for the time anyway!
The artwork used on the website found its way everywhere during that time… including onto a lovely set of Whiteley Village place-mats!
Fast forward to 2012 and we seem to have taken a step back at least in terms of design… in fact, we even seem to have lost our logo! In fairness to the website though, it suddenly got a lot bigger with nearly three times as many pages, lots more information and lots and lots of lovely pictures (some of which are so lovely that they still appear on the website today!) so we’re guessing a “clean” (i.e. sparse) design was what we needed.
Three years later and we’ve arrived at 2015 and our pen-ultimate design:
Nice to see we’ve got ourselves a Social Media presence as well… with links to Facebook and Twitter!
And now here we are with our new 2019 design…
Hope you enjoyed our little trip down memory lane!
